Carnival Cruise Line has announced a new Carnival Venicecurrently on her way to New York on her maiden voyage after joining Carnival, she will not have a godmother, but she will be the first cruise ship to have a traditional godfather.
Late night talk show host and comedian Jay Leno will do the honors, and will christen the ship at a naming ceremony on June 14, 2023.

Carnival Venice will be the first Carnival cruise ship to have a godfather, not a godmother, Carnival Cruise Line has announced that the ship is less than two weeks away from its official christening.
“Carnival Venezia originally entered the service of our Italian sister Costa Cruises and was christened in 2019, so it already has a god.” said Christine Duffy, President of Carnival Cruise Line.
Costa Venezia’s godmother is Gan Beiye, the matriarch of a Chinese family in love Costa Cruises and had been walking this line for several years before Costa Venezia first appearance. As the ship was designed for the Chinese maritime market and originated in Shanghai, the relationship was a natural one.
Now, if Costa Venezia is preparing to debut in the Big Apple and bring “Carnival Fun, Italian Style” travel fans, it is appropriate that the new ritual godparent be a New York native with Italian heritage.
“With Carnival Venezia joining the fleet and sailing from New York, we wanted to make sure the ship was well received and we thought having the godfather would be fun and appropriate,” said Duffy. “And when we thought of someone who would make a FUN godfather with Italian heritage, we knew Jay Leno would be the perfect godfather!”

“I am very honored to be called the god of Carnival Venezia. It was an opportunity I could not refuse,” said Leno. “Carnival’s focus on FUN combined with the Italian theme of this ship is something very special. I’m also excited to have my own ship, although I think I’ll need a bigger garage!
Leno is best known as the late-night talk show host, The Tonight Showwhere he retired in 2014. He also produces and hosts the CNBC primetime series Jay Leno’s Garagehe writes a regular series on auto repair and maintenance for Popular Mechanics, and is involved in many charitable causes.
Leno has been involved with Carnival Cruise Line in the past, having hosted the Carnival LIVE entertainment show.
The naming ceremony of Carnival Venice will be Wednesday, June 14, 2023, in New York. Details about the ceremony have yet to be announced, but it will include a ceremonial blessing of the new ship to wish him and all who sail on it safety and happiness.
The ship is under way during his first visit, a 15-night cruise from Barcelona to New York. Guests aboard the refurbished ship are enjoying trips to Malaga, Spain; Gibraltar, UK; Lisbon and Ponta Delgada, Portugal; and Halifax, Nova Scotia.
