When it comes to luxury hotels, Houston has a bad rap. Everything is bigger in the fourth largest city in the US, including lodging. Looking for a great conference venue? Downtown and the Texas Medical Center have it. Or maybe a town hall with fixins’? Tilman Fertitta’s five-diamond Post Oak Hotel in Uptown checks all those boxes.
In Texas Monthly’s “Best New Hotels in Texas,” one resort in the Bayou City made the cut. Well, two if you both read the honorable mention.

Oilman Walter Fondren built the original art house 100 years ago, though it has since been added to and modified. It is called an inn and restaurant in the south of France, many similarities stand there. Sure, these two things have the same abilities. While its French counterpart is open and breezy, Houston’s rendition is warm and intimate.
The Houston brand opened as a hotel in 1979 and closed four decades later for a facelift. In 2021, La Colombe d’Dor reopened in a grander fashion: with a 34-story tower, 19 guest suites, five suites designed by Impressionist artists, and a group of apartments overlooking the courtyard.
