MANILA, Philippines – The Hotel Sales and Marketing Association (HSMA) on Thursday officially opened the elections for the ninth edition of the Virtus Awards, an honor given to hospitality groups, as an invitation to adapt to change even though it is one of the sectors affected by the epidemic.
The media launch of the event was organized by HSMA President Loleth So and other top executives on July 20 in Pasig City, where several hotel and business executives attended.
Among those present at the event were SM Hotels and Conventions Vice President Peggy Angeles, Director of Sales Conrad Manila Ian Bencio David, who hosted the event, and The Bellevue Manila General Manager Marivic Recio, who was a 2016 Virtus Awardee.
This year’s theme, “Beyond the Bottom Line,” encourages hospitality groups and the public to respond to “changing tastes” and shape future trends.
Members are invited to submit their entries starting July 20 through the HSMA website under the following categories:
- Best in Sales and Marketing
- Leading Sales and Marketing Manager
- Best Sales and Marketing Leader
- Institutional Award for Best Marketing Campaign of the Year.
Judging criteria will be based on actual accomplishments, customer service and business knowledge, teamwork and interpersonal relationships, and commitment to continuing education.
The names of the judges and the exact percentages of each judging item were not disclosed, however HSMA confirmed that an accounting firm would record the results.

Virtus Awards Chairperson Rose Libongco said they want to recognize colleagues who have mastered the art of marketing and marketing their markets with positive results.
“Let’s remember that success is not only measured by what you have achieved financially… but with the unfathomable goals we leave in the hearts of those we serve,” said Libongco at the event.
“This [Virtus Award] it’s about building real relationships, building trust and making memories, even lasting friendships. It’s creating unique experiences for customer needs and solutions that deliver and delight,” he added.
‘Help to inspire, grow’
The Virtus Awards, which started in 2015, has become one of the most sought-after awards in the Philippine hospitality sector.
For Libongco, the award encourages the development of sales and marketing teams and encourages them to create new products and services.
The Virtus Awards chair also recognized each category of the tourism industry.
“We (company leaders) only introduce you to our customers; we introduce it to the public. But in the end, it’s the hotel people, operations, front desk, housekeeping, food and beverage (staff) who deliver on your promises,” he said.
The ninth Virtus Award is presented jointly by the Department of Tourism, Tourism Promotions Board and data technology company Isentia. – Fellow student Bless Aubrey Ogerio
